The Gordon Lewis Memorial Scratch Billiards Championship

The 2020 Gordon Lewis winner John Mullane and runner up Daniel Zagaroli

John Mullane has won his 7th Gordon Lewis title in the last ten years, beating the only other man to have won it during that time.
The early going was surprisingly nervy as both players struggled to adjust to the brand new cloth, but John was able to edge himself ahead during the first 30 minutes, 147-91, thanks largely to a fine 73 break. However, both players then settled into the match during the second half of the first period, with John adding another 73 break, plus runs of 47 and 31, whilst Danny ensured it wasn't all one-way traffic with a quickfire 53. However, at the break John led 325-219.
Danny then began to edge himself right into the game and at one point got the difference down to under 30 points.  A marvellously controlled 146 by Mullane then put him back into a commanding 502-329 lead and Danny's 55 towards the end wasn't enough as the second hour ended with John the winner by 625-461.
Many thanks to Chandlers Ford Central for providing the excellent match table and venue, to Tony Aldridge for helping with refereeing, and to Terry Azor for finding the trophy and saving us a few quid as we now don't have to buy a new one!
Finally, commiserations to Danny and congratulations to John for another victory in our elite competition, and thanks to all who attended the final.

John Mullane (73, 73, 47, 31, 146, 65) 625
v
Daniel Zagaroli (53, 30, 55) 461

Final played on Wednesday 27th Oct 2021 - venue - Chandlers Ford Central

Congratulations to (left to right) Paul Lawrence, Korbin Lowe, Andrew Carter and Mark McLean for reaching finals night.

Paul Lawrence was a worthy champion of the very first Challenge Cup, scoring over 200 points in both of his matches in the 1hr timed event at Sarisbury Social Club. In securing the victory his name will go down in the league's history books as the first ever winner.

The final started well for Paul as he raced away to a 50-15 point lead in the first 10 minutes but Andy then hit back with a 28 break to close the gap. By the halfway point Paul had managed to stretch his lead again to 33 (107 - 74) which he then gradually added to over the next 25 minutes leaving himself 70 points to the good with just 5 minutes left on the clock... then came the fightback as Andy rallied well to get back in the tie by scoring 35 points to Pauls 5 in the remaining minutes but unfortunately for Andy he ran out of time leaving Paul as the eventual winner by a score of 217 - 182.

Many thanks to Terry Azor for volunteering as referee and to ALL this year's entrants of the Gordon Lewis who are helping to grow this great tournament. We hope that next season there will be even more entrants.

Gordon Lewis Main Semi Final to be played 7.30pm on Thursday 14th Oct 2021, venue - Park Gate RBL
2 x 45min timed

Daniel Zagaroli (42,49,39,46) 380 v 238 Steve Allen (43,37)

Steve started the match very well with breaks of 43 and 37 in the first few visits, putting Danny under some early pressure. But, with some good safety play and a bit of patience, Danny then started to swing the match in his favour knocking in a couple of 40+ breaks in the process, seeing him take the lead at the 45 minute buzzer by 188 points to Steve's 134.
The second 45 minutes continued in the same fashion with Danny managing to keep the momentum and registering 39 and 46 breaks to stretch further away winning the match by 380 - 238

John Mullane (139,65,39,71,66) 428 v 261 Terry Azor (65,60,48)

John started with a bang, and his first visit (apart from breaking-off) was a tremendous 139 which put Terry under pressure straight away. Terry wasn't able to find his usual steady form and Mullane went in again with a 65 to really crank up the pressure. At the 45 minute buzzer, John led by 272-85.

The second half saw a more even contest, and Terry soon stroked in a fine 60. John hit back with a 71 to dispel thoughts of an Azor comeback, and both then added further 60+ breaks in what was a high quality affair. Despite Terry edging the second period, John ran out a deserved winner and faces Danny yet again in the final in a couple of weeks.

Thanks to all who attended, to newly-crowned Challenge Cup winner Paul Lawrence for preparing the tables, and to Park Gate RBL for allowing the matches to be played there.
