Some nail-biters in the cup as Mullane hits five half-centuries

Close finishes were the order of the day in the Usher Shield as 86 points was the combined difference across the four matches.

Champions Park Gate were the most comfortable winners, even though their margin over Sarisbury was just 42 points. Chris Christodoulou's sizeable win over Norman Bradfield was telling in the final reckoning, as only Gary Wilton amongst his team-mates recorded a win. However, Chris Collinson, Kas Remzi and Geoff Knapp's (31 unfinished) wins over Ian Finch, Paul Lawrence (33 break) and Steve Boterhoek respectively weren't enough for the away side in the end. The prospect of a league and cup double remains alive for the Park Gaters.

Things were closer at Curdridge as the home side edged Chandlers Ford by just nine points. An incredible five half-centuries by John Mullane (63, 56, 53, 51, 51) saw him past Clive Gamblin, and skipper Terry Azor (30 break) beat Rob Smith. However, Richard Marshall beat Dave White with a bit to spare and Brian Bull beat Korbin Lowe with some ease. Derek Fry beat Trevor Thorn meaning it all added up to a narrow but much-needed win for the home team who may look to the team cup competition to take their minds off their league woes.

Hamble skipper Will Mildenhall was the toast of his team-mates over at Totton, as his 176 point win over Steve Allen made life much easier for them. Nick Wood was again in sparkling form as he overcame Mike Thatcher with runs of 30, 50 and 57, though Mick Kunzi (35 break) scored a useful 77 point win over Tony Spridgeon. Ryan Longhurst had a similar win over Mark Spridgeon, but Mildenhall's mammoth win then left Rob Shattock needing only to score 26 points to close-out the match.

It was four-man teams at Churchills as St Denys came from behind to pip the Eastleigh outfit by just 8 points. Andy Carter (33, 35) started well against Derek Foster but was remorselessly pegged back over the second half of the match, then Tom Emm was well-beaten by Steve Hulbert to leave the home team sitting pretty. Chris Bishop (33, 54, 32) showed his best form of the season in recording a good win over Mark McLean which left skipper Mark Emm needing to beat Trevor Sanders to secure another unlikely win, which he secured with the assistance of a 43 break.

In the player rankings, the top seven players are all over 5000 points, but Nick Wood is well clear at the top as his impressive form continues.
